On Our Radar
Car Insurance Fairness
Discriminatory auto insurance practices have an especially negative effect on people of color. This is because many of the relevant factors, like ZIP code, credit score, and home ownership status, have significant racial disparities in our state. Luckily, bill S357/A1674 is moving through the NJ legislature now. This bill would prohibit insurers from using credit history, education, and occupation in auto insurance pricing and underwriting.
Domestic Workers Bill of Rights
Domestic workers, like in-home caregivers, housekeepers, and gardners, earn some of the lowest wages and have few of the job protections normally offered in other fields. Bill S723 would require that domestic workers be paid the minimum wage, have written employment contracts, and be protected under the state's discrimination laws, among other things.
Access to Affordable Housing
Senate bill S934 is aiming to better balance the criteria involved in applying for affordable housing. It acknowledges that screening based on credit score or credit worthiness is often a pretext to discriminate against potential tenants based on race, disability, or other protected classes. The bill is seeking to end such practice.
