Gun Violence Resources

Even when experienced as stark and brutal, the causes of violence are complex. Different forms of violence have distinctive dynamics and remedies. Social as well as individual factors are involved. The collapse of families, economic injustices, breakdown of community institutions, unemployment, inadequate moral formation and guidance, personal irresponsibility, racism and sexism, inability to deal with anger and conflict, homophobia, low self-esteem, psychological problems, biochemical imbalances, and substance abuse — these and other factors lie behind the incidence of violent crime today. Fear, anxiety, and alienation are expressed through readily available weapons of destruction." (A Social Message On Community Violence)

Gun Safety 3.0

Bills We Support

A new package of gun safety bills are being proposed in NJ!

These proposals (bill numbers have not been assigned yet) would:

  • ban .50 caliber firearms;

  • require gun safety classes for anyone seeking a gun permit;

  • mandate that gun owners store their firearms in a gun safe or lock box (click here to see the full text of bill A2215)

  • obligate gun owners who move to New Jersey from other states to register for firearm purchaser ID card and register their firearms within 60 days of moving to the state;

  • and require manufacturers or dealers of handgun ammunition to keep a detailed electronic record of ammunition sales, and report them to the State Police.

The Governor is also proposing legislation that would require microstamping technology, which links firearm cartridge casings found at the scene of a crime to a specific firearm, without having to recover the firearm itself. (Click here to see full text of bill A2216)

The Governor is also proposing to hold the gun industry accountable for illegal weapons purchased out-of-state at gun shows through interstate commerce regulations.

Please email or call your state elected officials and insist that they tell you their position on these measures, and share your support of gun safety bills with them.
